Switching the Gears of Decarbonisation

Policy Action for a Low-Carbon Transformation of the Bulgarian Economy

The green transformation of Europe has gained momentum with the higher ambition of the ‘Fit-for-55 package’. Within this long-term framework, the energy and climate targets of individual member statesshould step on the use of a data-driven analysis of the potential decarbonisation pathways and of the array of measures at the governments’ disposal. For Bulgaria, reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 is possible. To achieve this, however, it needs to overhaul its current energy and climate policy framework and to unlock the country’s enormous renewable energy potential.

The current report develops a policy scenario, using the modelling tool, Pathways Explorer, that charts the future pathway of decarbonisation in Bulgaria based on the current policy framework. The assessment also identifies a set of specific policy measures covering four key economic sectors: energy supply, buildings, transportation, and industry.
