THE FACTOR of corruption in business is on the rise, a survey of Coalition 2000, an NGO monitoring corruption practices, has reportedly shown. In June the factor stood at 1.1, now it reaches 1.3, with 53% of the Bulgarian businesses being forced to pay bribes to government officials on public procurement tenders, the study showed. The most widespread bribe size varies between BGN 250 and BGN 500, paid usually to circumvent customs limitations. About 100,000 bribes are handled to government servants per month, polls among various social strata show. Most susceptible to corruption are the university lecturers, followed by customs officers, court officials and policemen.
