Less than ten years from 2030, countries in the Southeast European (SEE) region still have high shares of lignite-fired electricity in the mix, generated by an ageing fleet of power plants. However, the energy landscape is transforming rapidly with the European Green Deal: the EU adopted a higher emission reduction target for 2030 (-55 per cent compared to the 1990 levels) and a long-term objective to be climate-neutral by 2050.

During the online conference on June 17, 2021 the participants discussed opportunities and challenges in the power sector of SEE EU Member States and highlighted possible pathways forward for Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Romania for greening their economies. The discussion focussed on different options for green recovery after the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and for accelerating the renewables uptake in their power systems. The event delivered a facts-based dialogue on the implementation of the EU Green Deal in Southeast Europe and provided space for fostering inclusive alliances comprised of governments, EU institutions, utilities, think-tanks, NGOs and citizens.

The online discussion gathered experts from the four SEE countries, including Dr. Radostina Primova and Martin Vladimirov from the Center for the Study of Democracy in Bulgaria, Hrvoje Dorotić from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FSB) at the University of Zagreb, Dimitri Lalas from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), Radu Dudau from the Energy Policy Group (EPG) in Romania, and was complemented by a comprehensive outlook on the commercial PV prosumer market in the SEE region by Toby Couture from E3Analytics and Zsuzsanna Pató from the Regulatory Assistance Project.

With this final EU-wide conference, the European research team completed successfully the three-and-a-half-year cross-country energy transition journey called the Southeast Europe Energy Transition Dialogue. The project was led by Agora Energiewende and implemented by CSD, EPG, NOA and FSB
