Low-Carbon Transition Policies of the Bulgarian Energy Sector

11:00

Bulgaria will have to transform its energy sector over the next decade by phasing out coal-fired power generation and stepping up investment in renewables. The country's targets for the share of renewables in final energy consumption are not ambitious enough. The strategy to promote renewable energy technologies needs to change together with the revision of the Integrated Energy and Climate Plan in 2023 and the update of the working document for the Long-Term Decarbonisation Strategy by mid-2022.

These are some of the main conclusions summarised by CSD in an analysis that presents different scenarios for technological and policy innovation for the energy transition of South East Europe (SEE), developed together with leading European energy institutes. The analysis was presented at a roundtable on 28 April 2022, organised jointly with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

In addition to experts from CSD, the discussion was also attended by Borislav Sandov, Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policies and Minister of Environment and Water, Ivaylo Mirchev, Deputy Chairman of the Energy Committee of the National Assembly, Slavtcho Neykov, Chair of the Management Board of EMI, and Stanislav Andreev, Managing Director of the consultancy company EnEffect Consult.
