The crisis of representative democracy in Europe and the Western Balkans is becoming increasingly evident – voter turnout is declining, far-right trends are gaining popularity, and uncertainty regarding the EU accession of some countries persists. However, the emergence of new social movements and local initiatives demonstrates that citizens are seeking ways to engage in politics and decision-making processes beyond traditional channels such as elections.

In order to promote citizen participation in democratic life, CSD organized a civic consultation on 22 November 2024 in Plovdiv. Citizens and activists took part in three parallel interactive workshops, exploring challenges and future scenarios in the areas of sustainable environmental development, Bulgaria's role in the EU, and the rule of law.

In 2025, CSD will discuss with experts and policymakers at the national and European levels how the ideas proposed by citizens could be transformed into concrete policies and strategies.
