Before the Vote: Foreign Influence and Disinformation in the Upcoming Elections

Sofia

At a press conference on 6 June 2024, the Center for the Study of Democracy presented the results of an express opinion poll on possible malign external influence, including through the use of disinformation, in the European Parliament and national parliamentary elections to be held on 9 June 2024.

What is the share of Bulgarians who share conspiracy theories and disinformation narratives, how do Bulgarians see the role of the European Parliament, what are the concerns about possible interference of foreign governments in our elections and who are these governments are some of the questions that were addressed. The results of media monitoring of three important issues that found their way into the election campaign - Bulgaria's accession to Schengen and the euro area and the provision of military aid to Ukraine - were also discussed, with a focus on how the political debate on these issues is presented on social media and the main narratives related to them in the online news media.

Full video (in Bulgarian) is available at the BTA web-site.

The Express poll was conducted using a methodology developed by the Central European (CEDMO) and Hungarian (LAKMUSZ-HDMO) Digital Media Observatories, which are part of a European network fighting the spread of misinformation. The Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory for Digital Media (BROD), within which the study is being conducted in Bulgaria, is also part of this network.
