In January 2025, Sofia Municipality will introduce one of Europe's first low emission zones for domestic heating, but enforcement controls remain unclear.

The creation of a low emission zone aims to improve the quality of the urban environment, reduce air pollution and help introduce more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways of domestic heating. With strong political will and active dialogue with stakeholders, the Low Emission Zone has the potential to become one of the most ambitious tools to ensure a healthier environment for the citizens of Sofia.
